It's a strange thought, but most of us don't really grasp how valuable our personal information actually is. That's something hackers know all too well.
They use something called social engineering, which is basically a clever trick. Instead of breaking through firewalls, they focus on manipulating people – you, me, our colleagues – to spill sensitive information or give them access to our systems. These attacks are notoriously hard to spot because they play on very human traits like trust and curiosity.
Attackers use all sorts of sneaky tactics: those convincing-looking phishing emails, fake websites designed to steal your login, or even direct, in-person interactions.
So, how do you protect yourself? The biggest step is simply being aware. Always be wary of unexpected messages, especially those that try to make you feel emotional (urgent, fearful, excited) or ask you to click on links or open attachments. If something feels off, or you're not sure if a message is real, the safest bet is to contact the sender directly using a verified number or email (not by replying to the suspicious message itself!). A little caution goes a long way in keeping you safe from these sneaky tricks.
